AI Overviews, Google’s new generative AI search feature, has finally arrived, taking center stage on page one of the SERPs and potentially changing the way people search forever.

As marketers, it’s not enough to simply understand what AI Overviews are and how they work. Given their potential to dry up search traffic, you need to know what you can do to optimize for them and how to get an AI Overview citation. That’s what I’ll cover in this article, providing you with the lowdown on AI Overviews, the impact they could have on SEO, the findings of our research, and expert advice on how to navigate this new landscape.

What are AI Overviews?

AI Overviews are Google’s attempt to integrate generative AI into search results, initially called Search Generative Experience. They were tested for a year in Google Search Labs before launching to the public on May 14th, 2024. Currently, AI Overviews only appear for logged-in users in the U.S., but Google plans to expand to more countries soon.

AI Overviews don’t appear for every query; only when Google believes they will be particularly helpful to users. They can contain a number of different elements, including AI-generated text, images, and multimedia content. When an AI Overview appears, it will either be at the very top of search results or between the paid and organic listings.

But, according to Google, that may not be the case. Google’s data shows AI Overview users are more satisfied with search results, and they ask longer, more complex questions.

Our Research Findings

We asked 623 digital marketers in the US who are familiar with AI Overviews what they thought of the feature. Well over half (59.55 percent) said they were very optimistic or slightly optimistic about their impact. Only 12.2 percent said they were very pessimistic.

  • 72.78 percent of respondents are optimistic about the impact of AI Overviews on their website traffic, despite the potential risks.
  • Our respondents could believe they’ll see higher clickthrough rates (and, therefore, more traffic) if Google lists their sites as a source in AI Overviews.
  • There is truth to this, as articles from my blog have seen month-over-month traffic increases after being cited in AI Overviews results.
